RESEARCH INTERESTS

· Aquatic ecology: I am interested in how major ecological processes such as competition, and predation, structure aquatic communities and in turn how these findings can be used to improve aquaculture management and increase fish production. Relationships between productivity and nutrient supply, zooplankton grazing and algal abundance, and fish predation and zooplankton abundance are the focus in this area.

· Fish biology: Research efforts have included ontogenetic diet shifts in larval fish, fish feeding behaviour under captivity, fish cannibalism, and bioenergetics modelling.

· Aquaculture: Research interests concern pond fertilisation theory and practice, green-water aquaculture, water quality management, fish nutrition, polyploidy induction, and fish farming in tanks, cages, and ponds.

· Biofuel from algae: My interest in algal culture has gone beyond the production as a basal food to primary consumers in aquaculture. The reliance of petroleum sourced fuels is now widely recognized as unsustainable because of depleting supplies and the contribution of these fuels to the accumulation of carbon dioxide in the environment. My research in this area includes the study of the environmental requirements and genetic manipulation of oleaginous algae.
